Colorado’s Front Range, 8x10 Color

1988-2002

After grad school I started making color pictures with my 8x10 camera, which I’d used while in school, but only for black & white. Shooting color was a gift and a relief. It felt like I had discovered a new grammar and syntax for a medium that had become, in graduate school, too closely inspected and disassembled, and had become frustratingly familiar in its shortcomings and failures. I could, in a way, begin again with these new tools, to make pictures and create meaning in a way that would allow me to re-establish my practice in photography, and my love for the medium.

Having grown up on the Front Range just east of Boulder, I’d learned to love that landscape, and spent time off and weekends trying to accomodate the changes I witnessed there.
